Susanta Bandyopadhyay, MD, PhD

Dr. Susanta Bandyopadhyay is an Associate Professor of Neurology in the department’s Epilepsy division at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  He is certified in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and Epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Bandyopadhyay is currently a member of the American Epilepsy Society, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (in which he also served on the Continuing Medical Education Committee), the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Medical Association. He has received recognition for his work in clinical neurophysiology, including the Clinical Neurophysiology Award of Excellence from the VUMC Neurology Department. He is also a Fellow of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and the American Epilepsy Society, and has been named on the Best Doctors in America list for several years.

His research has been published in such journals as the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, Epilepsy and Behavior Case Report, and Journal of Neurophysiology.

Prior to his position at VUMC, Dr. Bandyopadhyay worked as an academic clinician in the epilepsy center at the University of Missouri in Columbia. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he engaged in a number of teaching and mentorship activities. He completed a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology/Epilepsy at VUMC, during which time he served as Chief Fellow. He completed residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. Prior to residency, he earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Alabama in Birmingham where he studied the basic mechanisms underlying epilepsy. His Ph.D. research inspired a return to clinical work with a focus on epilepsy.

He earned his MD, MBBS, and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene all from the University of Calcutta, India. Dr. Bandyopadhyay worked as an academic physician in India for several years before moving to the United States to pursue his Ph.D.
